William Clyde Rev. Mathis

Rev. William C. "Bill" Mathis, age 82, of Rome, died Monday morning, October 13th, 2008 at a local hospital.
Rev. Mathis was born in Lindale, on September 1st, 1926, the son of the late Clyde D. and Nellie Hall Mathis. He was educated in the public schools of Lindale, a graduate of Rome High School in 1945, attended Truett-McConnell College, Shorter College and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He attended the University of Georgia, Oglethorpe University and West Georgia College. Rev. Mathis was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Rev. Mathis was an ordained Baptist Minister and was licensed to preach the Gospel in 1949 at First Baptist Church of Lindale. Besides pastoring churches, he also taught school in Floyd, Cobb and Douglas Counties for 11 years. Rev. Mathis worked in textile for a number of years and retired after 15 years at Lindale Mfg. Company in 1990. Rev. Mathis was married to the former Frances Headrick of Armuchee in 1958. She preceded him in death in 2003.
Survivors include 2 nephews and their famlies, the Dale Headrick, Sr. Family and the Pat Headrick Family. Several cousins also survive.
Funeral services for Rev. William C. "Bill" Mathis will be held this (Thursday) morning, October 16th, 2008 at 11 o'clock at the First Baptist Church of Lindale with the Rev. J. Holland Thomas and the Rev. Tim Burnham officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion conducting military graveside rites. Rev. Mathis will lie-in-state at the church this (Thursday) morning from 10 until 11 o'clock.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Thomas Headrick, Jr., Jacob and Ryan Headrick, Jack Ellis, Jim Mehaffey and Sammy Tapp. Selected friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.
