Roger Del Callahan, 71 of Rome, passed away on January 7, 2024 at his home. He was surrounded by his loved ones during his final moments.
Roger was born on September 5, 1952 in Anniston, AL to his parents, Delano and Allene Callahan. From Anniston, AL to Franklin, GA and eventually to Rome where Roger spent the majority of his life. From a young age, Roger played music and continued to play music for almost the entirety of his life. Playing drums, guitar and the bass guitar, Roger was passionate about music. Some would suspect that it was because of the joy he would bring to those that could see him do what he loved. Playing in many bands through the years, none would get him as excited as the last band he played in called The Backwater Band. Carl Owens, Shang Callahan and Roger started the band in 1993 and soon added longtime friend, Kin Buffington to the stage. Backwater would eventually have many musicians that are still friends and played for 26 years, "Somebody Scream!"
Roger could fix anything but a broken heart. Roger had a great sense of humor and lived life to the fullest. He never forgot a name. Roger was also an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He would spend his last dollar to buy a bucket of minnows if the crappie were biting.
Roger is survived by his sons, Shawn Callahan and his wife Karen of Armuchee; Shang Callahan and Shannon Conway of Rome; Diane Callahan (Shang's mother); brother, Eddie Callahan; sisters, Darlene Rexroad of Blue Ridge, GA , Sherry Dale of Armuchee, Melissa Almond of Rome, GA; grandchildren, Austin Callahan and his wife Erin, Holly Callahan, Georgia Womack, Zara Callahan; as well as four great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his loving parents, Delano and Allene (Gurley) Callahan.
The family will contact those that wish to come to the memorial service when the final arrangements have been finalized. Flowers or monetary donations can be sent to 34 Glenrise Terrace, Rome, GA 30161.
Salmon Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Roger Del Callahan.
