Robert Lewis Gordon, age 86, of Rome, Georgia, passed away on Saturday night, October 15th, 2011 at Winthrop West of Rome, Georgia after a long illness.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Mr. Gordon was born on September 18th, 1925, the son of the late Robert Calvin Gordon and the late Francis Brazzell Gordon. Prior to moving to Rome 1 year ago, Mr. Gordon had lived in Savannah, Georgia since 1942. Mr. Gordon was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees. Serving in the European Theatre and participated in the Normandy Invasion and the Thine River Crossing. He was one of the first troops to enter Paris. Mr. Gordon was a member of the Wilmington Island United Methodist Church in Savannah, the Acacia Masonic Lodge #452, the Scottish Rite Bodies and Alee Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #660. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Gordon was retired educator having retired as school principal at Castle Heights Academy in Savannah. He was a volunteer with Senior Citizens Activity Programs in Savannah leading them in exercising and teaching line dancing. Mr. Gordon was preceded in death by his first wife, Annabelle McClure Gordon on August 27th, 1999 and by his son, Ken Randal Gordon on September 27th, 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Josie Phillips Gordon of Rome, to whom he was married on May 6th, 2006; a step -daughter, Jane Thacker and her husband Randy of Rome; a step-son, John Bohannon and his wife, Kathy of Port Wentworth, GA.; 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside and interment services for Mr. Gordon will be held on Wednesday afternoon, October 19th, 2011 at 2 o'clock in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, Ga. with the Rev. Michael T. Brown officiating.
