Patty Jewett was born in New York City March 25 1931, to William Kennon Jewett and Laura Ross.
She passed away peacefully February 20, 2025 at home in Summerville, Georgia as was her wish. She was cared for by her partner of the last 30 years, Tony Jones. And her beloved dogs were at bedside.
Her early years were spent in New York City with her father. Her later childhood was spent in Springfield, Ohio with her grandmother, Jane Jewett Bayley and step grandfather, William Bayley. Her enduring love of literature and appreciation for the beauties and intricacies of the natural world were born from her childhood in the Midwest
Her vocal talents were nurtured by her grandparents and following high school, she attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York, studying Opera. Her passion for music persisted throughout her life. She shared her talent by singing with the church choirs she joined throughout her life until she was in her 90s.
After leaving Juilliard, she attended the University of Michigan where she met Law student, John (Jack) Bugay. They married in 1953 and moved to California, eventually settling in Santa Barbara.
Patty lived a full life, with many adventures that included hiking, biking, a Safari to Africa, fishing in the wilderness of Alaska and enjoying the beauty of Hawaii. She was a resident of Great Britain for 16 years and upon her return to the US she lived in the Midwest and then returned to the West Coast for many years, finally settling in North Georgia to be close to family.
If you were golfing in Colorado Springs you might have played on the Patty Jewett Golf Course. A gift to the City from her Great-uncle William Kennon Jewett and named after her namesake Great aunt Patty Jewett. Patty was the guest of honor at the 100th anniversary of the Patty Jewett Golf Course in 1998.
Patty was preceded in death by her older sister, Ann Jewett, her husband John (Jack) Bugay, and her husband Edwin Soxman.
Patty is survived by Anthony Jones her partner of three decades, her three children: Dr. Paula Stewart (Chattanooga, TN), John Bugay and wife Sophia Lara (Boerne TX) and Philip Bugay and wife Terrie Bugay (Santa Barbara CA) in addition to six grandchildren: John Stewart, David Stewart, Chelsea Stickney, Kennon Bugay, Bridgette Bugay and Braden Bugay; as well as four great grandchildren: Hadley Condiotti, Laila Condiotti, Noah Stickney and Leighton Bugay-Poole.
Patty lived an extraordinary, fearless and colorful life. She was infinitely curious and adventurous, and gifted with true human kindness and an ebullient sense of humor. She was the person who saw good and purpose in everything. She is best remembered by her grandchildren for questioning “Where is your sense of adventure?“
A light has gone out. She has slipped away from us.
Salmon Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to serve the family of Patty Soxman.
