Otis W. Ashworth, age 85, of #118 Grant Road, Armuchee, (the Rosedale Community) died Tuesday afternoon, August 7th, 2007 at Golden Living Center of Rome.
A native of Chattooga County, Georgia, Mr. Ashworth was born on October 2nd, 1921, the son of the late Robert and Emma Gentry Ashworth. He was of the Baptist Faith. Mr. Ashworth was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Army Air Corp and was a P.O.W. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Museum, a member of Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion, D.A.V. and a member American Prisoner of War. Entered Army Air Force on July 24th, 1942. After training was assigned as a Flight Engineer and Top Turnet Gunner on a B17 Flying Fortress. Sent to England and assigned to Eighth Air Force, 95th, Bomb Group. On 7th mission over Europe plane shot on Munster Raid and taken prisoner. Sent to Stalog 17B at Krems, Austria until liberation on May 2, 1945. Graduated from Georgia Tech in 1954 degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Ashworth was associated with General Electric of Rome. Mr. Ashworth was preceded in death by a son, Gary Ashworth on June 3rd, 2007, by a brother and by 5 sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Taylor Ashworth to whom he was married on May 2nd, 1973, 2 sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael and Annette Ashworth of Decatur, Alabama and Neil Ashworth of Atlanta, Georgia; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Ashworth of McKee, Kentucky. 5 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services for Otis W. Ashworth will be held on Friday afternoon, August 10th, 2007 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward E. Holsomback and Rev. Keith Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in East View Cemetery with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
Active pallbearer will include 3 grandsons, Matt, Drew, and Alex Ashworth, Stephen Strickland and Jeff Taylor.
Mr. Ashworth will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends on Friday afternoon from 1 until 2 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
