Myrtle Tarpley-Turner, age 86, of Winthrop West, Rome, and a long time resident of East 11th Street, Rome, died Saturday morning, September 23rd, 2006 at a local hospital.
A native of Villa Rica, Georgia, Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was born on May 27th, 1920, the daughter of the late Warner J. and Della Stewart McBrayer. Mrs. Tarpley-Turner had spent the greater part of her life in Rome and prior to ill health was an active member of the Second Avenue Baptist Church. Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was a graduate of the Rome High Hilltoppers, a 61 year member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was a licensed real estate agent and was associated with Davis Realty Company in the 1950's. For a period of time Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was associated with Esserman's on Broad Street and for several years, she and her late husband, Charles Tarpley, were co-owners of Shorter Heights Florist of Rome. Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was a Red Cross Volunteer at Redmond Regional Medical Center and enjoyed working in her yard with all of her beautiful flowers. Her life was devoted to being with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was preceded in death by a son Stewart Jackson "Jack" Tarpley. Mrs. Tarpley-Turner was first married on June 21st, 1941 to Charles H. Tarpley who preceded her in death in 1980 and on June 25th, 1994 was married to M.G. Turner.
Survivors include 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and James "J.B." Hitchcock and Beverly and Ronnie Simmons all of Rome; 8 grandchildren, Dina, Missy, Ronnie, Ronda Lynn, Carla, Stacy, Grant and Mandy. 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services for Myrtle Tarpley-Turner will be held on Monday morning, September 25th, 2006 at 10 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Tarpley, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Cody Boyd, Danny Taylor, Joe Tarpley, Danny and Dean Drummond, Grant Tarpley, Steve Cowan, David Meade and Ronnie Simmons, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority which include, Sara Davis, Jerry Rice, B. Ann Rice, Ruth Koon, Naomi Swart, Marietta Near, Kathleen Tolbert, Mildred Powell, Jimmie Jo Knight, Eleanor Payne and Bettye Mathis. Active and honorary pallbearers are requested to meet at the funeral home on Monday morning by 9:30.
Ms. Tarpley-Turner will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Sunday) evening from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours the family will be at the home of a granddaughter and her husband, Dina and Steve Cowan, #505 Cooper Drive, East Rome.
