Louise Shelnutt, age 81, of Armuchee, GA, passed away Tuesday afternoon, April 1, 2014, at a Rome hospital.
Mrs. Shelnutt was born in Randolph County, AL, on September 12, 1932, the daughter of the late Calvin Lee and Duelalar Holloway Payne. She had been a resident of Floyd County since 1950 and was a member of the New Armuchee Baptist Church. Mrs. Shelnutt was very active in her church serving on the Hospitality Committee, the Building Committee and was a member and co-founder of the Joy Club. She was a graduate of Randolph County High School and Berry College and prior to retirement in 1986 was a teacher at Armuchee High School. Mrs. Shelnutt loved to sew and cook and enjoyed traveling. She was married on April 3, 1955, to her college sweetheart, Quitman Freeman Shelnutt, and he preceded her in death on May 6, 1998. A grandson, Drew Barnes, preceded her in death on April 15, 2011. Two brothers and a sister also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Shelnutt is survived by two daughters, Regina Barnes of Rome, and Kim Miller and her husband, Tony, of Calhoun; four grandchildren, Bradley Barnes, Keirson Miller, Gavin Miller and Josh Miller; two great-grandchildren, Iris Miller and Jace Miller; two brothers, Lamar (Brenda) Payne and Freddie (Jonnette) Payne, all of Wedowee, AL. Two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Watson of Hogansville, GA, and Shirley Payne of Wedowee, along with a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs. Shelnutt will be held on Sunday afternoon April 6, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at New Armuchee Baptist Church with Dr. David Howard and Rev. Tim Rice officiating. Interment will follow in the New Armuchee Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Shelnutt will be carried to the church in Sunday to lie in-state from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
Mrs. Shelnutt will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 p.m.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the church on Sunday by 2:30 p.m. and include Bradley Barnes, Gavin Miller, Josh Miller, Greg Tucker, John Payne and Kyle Hollis. The Joy Club will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
