Mr. Marvin Edmund Burnes, Jr., age 81, of #4 Hillcrest Avenue, (North Hills), Rome, died suddenly Friday morning, September 26th, 2008 at his residence following an extended illness.
Mr. Burnes was born in Greenville, South Carolina on March 24th, 1927. He was a son of the late Marvin E. Burnes, Sr. who died December 8th, 1940 and the late Grace Louise Clement Burnes who died December 24th, 1979. Mr. Burnes had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County most of his adult life and had attended Darlington School. He was a retired pipe fitter and steamfitter with Local 766 and was a member of the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 of the "American Legion. Mr. Burnes was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army. He received a World War II Victory Meddal and the Army Occupation Medal. Mr. Burnes was married in Haralson County, Georgia in December 1948 to the former Kathryn Onez McCurry who survives.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wiley Bascomb Burnes, who died in Orange County, California on May 25th, 1990 and by two sisters, Betty Jean Higgins who died in Cobb County, Georgia March 1978, and Doris Louise Vescovi who died in Floyd County, Georgia on November 24th, 1999. A nephew, Steven David Vescovi, also died in Floyd County on April 30th, 1981.
Survivors include: his wife, Kathryn McCurry Burnes of Rome; two sons, Craig Scott (Sandra) Burnes of Dalton and Jonathan Van (Totsie) Burnes of Rome; Four grandchildren: Sara Andrews of St. Marys, Georgia, Beverly Shamblin of Trion, Georgia, Emily and Holly Burnes both of Rome; one great-grandson, Alexander (Alex) Haven Andrews of St. Marys, Georgia. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Marvin E. Burnes will be conducted on Monday morning, September 29th, 2008 at 11 am at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Murdock officiating. Interment will follow in the Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
The following men will serve as active pallbearers and are asked to meet at the funeral home on Monday morning at 10:30. They include, Mike Worthington, Douglas Christie, Ricky Minshew, Bradley Robinson, Alan Weeks, David Cescutti, Yank Payne and G.A. McNiece.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. At other hours they will be at the residence in North Hills.
