John William Britt, Jr. age 79 of #121 Maplecrest Lane, S.E. Rome, passed away Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 at a local hospital.
A native of Fitzgerald, Georgia, Mr. Britt was born on January 27th, 1931, the son of the late John William Britt, Sr. and the late Tassie Louise Rooks Britt. He had spent the greater part of his life in Rome and was a 1948 graduate of the Rome Boy's High School and was a graduate of DeVry Institute in Atlanta, GA. Mr. Britt was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953. Mr. Britt was a very active member of the Fellowship Baptist Church in Rome where he was a Deacon, a member of the choir, a member of the Men's Sunday School class and was a former Training Union Director. Mr. Britt was a member of the Oostanaula Masonic Lodge #113 F&AM. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Britt was associated with Georgia Power for 40 years and following his retirement he was associated with Shorter College in the Security Department.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Cadle Britt to whom he was married on June 14th, 1953; 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Bojo and her husband, Jim of Rome and Janice Steed and her husband, Barry of Rome; 1 son, John William Britt, III of Rome; 2 grandchildren, Jennifer Starr and her husband, Major Scott of Soule, S. Korea and Brian Bojo and his wife, Jenny of Rome; 7 great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Haley, Owen and Skylar Starr, Mary Kate, Claire and Tucker Bojo.
Funeral services for John William Britt, Jr. will be held on Friday afternoon, October 29th, 2010, at 3 o'clock at Fellowship Baptist Church with Dr. Dale Levan officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens with the Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites. Mr. Britt will lie-in-state at the church on Friday afternoon from 2 until 3 o'clock.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Jim Bojo, Brian Bojo, Danny Fricks, Barry Steed, Jonathan Steed, Jeff Wigley and Dennis Johnston. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers, Hulyn Kight, Harold Price, Bernard Marshall, J.P Reid, Bill Wigley, Rufus McCary, Donald McClain, Donald Googe and James Easterwood.
Mr. Britt will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Thursday) evening from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
