John Wilburn Wilson (affectionately known as "Wilbur"), age 92, Rome, GA, passed away Saturday, August 25th, 2012 at Roman Court of Rome.
He was born in Cherokee County Alabama on January 27th, 1920, the son of the late Thomas Homer Wilson and Martha Maebell Whorton Wilson. He married his beloved wife Rebecca Wilson on June 6th, 1941. During their lifetime they worked hard, raised three children and spent time at Lake Weiss. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Rebecca, on July 28th, 2012. He was also preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Wilson was an extraordinarily active member of Hill Crest Baptist Church for more than 60 years, where he was ordained a deacon in 1949. He was instrumental in starting the first bus ministry, teaching the Jr. Boys Class, serving as the clerk, building the new sanctuary in 1965 and singing in the choir. One of his most notable services was in the Nursery. He loved the babies and they loved him. The children in the Nursery thought when they were at church, they were at his house. Everyone enjoyed his annual fish fry at the Lake for the choir and friends. He continued to serve the Church in many ways, even after he lost his vision, including "assisting" the cooks on Wednesday Night Suppers until just recently. His service was acknowledged by the distinctive honor of Deacon Emeritus at Hill Crest Baptist Church for his unfailing love of his Lord and Church.
Mr. Wilson was a founding member of Rome's Carpenters for Christ. He traveled to many states assisting other communities. When their travels took them beyond the South, he made them smile with his southern cooking. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, cooking, walking, and most of all, spending time at his cabin on Lake Weiss. He will be remembered for his boundless energy and sense of humor.
He served in the US Army during WWII. While raising his family, Mr. Wilson worked at Gibson-De Journette Wholesale Grocery Company, Simpson Wholesale Grocery and Echols Vending and Music Company.
He is survived by three children: Myra Reeves (Jimmy), Johnny Wilson (Barbara), and Vicki Glover all of Rome ; four grandchildren: Christi Lambert, Darien, GA, Shannon Lambert, Rome, GA, Jeff Glover, Rome, GA and Casey Glover, Wilmington, NC; a brother Bradford Wilson of Prattville, Ala.; special friend Bobby Lambert; numerous nieces and nephews; and his devoted four-legged friend Fluffy.
