Joan Rayburn Moats

Mrs. Joan Rayburn Moats, age 74, of Rome, GA, passed away on Thursday evening, June 8, 2017, following an extended illness.

A native of Rome and Floyd County, Joan was born on December 25, 1942, the daughter of the late William Cassell and Stella Cassell Broadway. She was a life-long resident of Rome and was of the Baptist faith. Joan was an entrepreneur, owning several businesses in the area including The Pub, The Beer Barrel and The Country House. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed visiting casinos. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death on June 8, 1965, by her husband, Maxie Kenneth Rayburn, Sr., whom she married December 28, 1958.

Joan is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Topsey Langford, Tubby and Dudley Kerr, and Dana McGuire; five sons and daughters-in-law, Maxie Rayburn, Jr., Pat and Debbie Rayburn, Mark and Melinda Rayburn, Richey and J'May Moats and Mackey and Angie Moats; a special friend, Mack Moats; a sister, Terrie Martin. Fifteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other friends and relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Joan will be held on Saturday, June 10, 2017, 12:00 noon in the Carl Sidwell Chapel of the Salmon Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Hart officiating. Interment will follow in the East View Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Saturday morning at Salmon Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral hour. At other hours they may be contacted at Joan's residence.

Pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Saturday by 11:30 a.m. and include Maxie Rayburn, Pat Rayburn, Mark Rayburn, Kenneth Rayburn, Trent Rayburn, Buggy Moats, Gram Moats and Griff McGuire. Honorary pallbearers will include Alvin Bryant, Fred Eller, Randall Fuller, Jimmy Massingill and Dale Sutton.
