James Paul Howell, Jr., age 78, of the Cave Spring Road, Rome, died Saturday morning, August 28th, 201 in a Rome hospital.
A native of Rome, Mr. Howell was born on June 10th, 1932, the son of the late James Paul Howell, Sr. and the later Annie Mae Massengill. Mr. Howell had spent his entire life in Floyd County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rome. Mr. Howell was a graduate of Rome High School and a graduate of the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree. Mr. Howell served in the United States Air Force. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Howell taught math and physics at East Rome High School and had served on the Floyd County Board of Education. Mr. Howell served as a Justice of the Peace in the Vann's Valley District, was a member of the Floyd County Democratic Association, was an emeritus member of Oostanaula Masonic Lodge #113 F&AM and was a Shriner. Mr. Howell was a pilot and loved flying. Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his former wife, Sue Howell and by a sister, Ellen Howell Bennett.
Survivors include 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Terri Howell of Rome and Jim and Denise Howell of Rome; 2 grandchildren, Kelsey Howell and Josey Howell. 1 nephew, Steve Bennett of Rome also survives.
A memorial service Celebrating the Life of James Paul Howell, Jr. will be held on Saturday evening, September 4th, 2010 at 5 o'clock at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home with Dr. Joel Snider officiating. Sharing in the service will be Dr. Matt Mumber and Richard Marable.
Members of Oostanaula Masonic Lodge #113 F&AM are requested to serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon from 4 until 5 o'clock at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel.
