James Millard McGill, Jr

August 6, 1935 — October 28, 2024

James Millard McGill Jr. was born on Baxter Street in Athens, Georgia in 1935. He was the oldest of six children. He spent his early life in Athens, but then his family moved to Moultrie, Georgia, where he graduated from Colquitt County High School. After high school, he received a degree in Agriculture from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, Georgia. James was also a veteran of the United States Army during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He was part of the 319th Transportation Company out of Albany, GA (Med Truck) serving a total of six years, mostly at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. He worked for BellSouth/AT&T as a switchman (switching technician) for over 30 years, retiring in 1994. Mr. McGill married Betty Anne Strouble in 1964 in Marietta, GA where he lived and worked for almost fifty years. In his free time he enjoyed camping, fishing, building and repairing things, and spending time with his family and grandchildren.


He is preceded in death by his parents, James Millard McGill, Sr. and Nell Stone McGill, a brother Donald McGill, brother Edwin “Ed” McGill, his beloved wife, Betty McGill, and a cherished daughter Cynthia Garrison.


James is survived by his sister Linelle Carlton of Thomasville, GA, sister Martha Jo Ricks of Hideaway, TX, brother John McGill of Dadeville, AL, stepdaughter Beverly Niklasson of Calhoun, grandchildren Christopher Kindon of Braselton, GA, Katherine Fisher of Woodstock, GA, and TJ Niklasson of Buckeye, AZ , many nieces and nephews as well as several great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. McGill will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Salmon Funeral Home with military rites conferred by the United States Army. A private Interment will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton at a later date. 

Mr. McGill’s family will receive friends at Salmon Funeral Home Sunday from 12:00 noon until the service hour.
