James M. "Jim" Penney, age 64, of #24 Cypress Street, Rome, (Riverside Community) died Thursday morning, September 6th, 2007 at Emory Hospital in Atlanta.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Penney was born on October 21st, 1943, the son of the late Bert and Louise Blaylock Penney. He has spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County, was a graduate of West Rome High School and a 1971 graduate of Shorter College earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in history and political science. Jim was a past president and member of The Toastmasters Club of Rome and a member and past president of the Kiwains Club of Cedartown. Jim was a long time newspaperman in Rome and Cedartown working for News Publishing Company most of his career serving in various positions with the Rome News-Tribune. Jim also was a reporter for the Dalton and LaFayette newspapers. Jim's career included a 14 year stint with The Cedartown Standard where he retired in 2006 as editor and publisher. Following his retirement, Jim was still working part-time as a reporter with the Rome News-Tribune on special editions such as Past Times and Prime Time. Jim said continuing part-time work in journalism would let him stay focused on work that he enjoyed and also allow him time with his children and grandchildren. Jim worked for several years with the Rome City Schools in its publication office.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Greg Gossage of Pelham, Alabama; a son and daughter-in-law, Bert and Melanie Penney of Maylene, Alabama; 2 grandchildren, Sophia Gossage and Samuel Penney, 1 sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Steve Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Warren and Charlotte Penney of Rome; 3 nieces and nephews , Chris Penney of Silver Creek, Rachael Miller of Acworth, GA. and Penney L. Miller of Knoxville, Tennessee also survive.
Funeral services for James M. "Jim" Penney will be held on Monday afternoon, September 10th, 2007 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Phyllis K. Edson officiating and Jim's brother, Warren Penney delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the family lot of East View Cemetery.
Jim will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Sunday) afternoon from 4 until 6 o'clock.
