Howard J. Tyler

August 20, 1934 — February 12, 2025

Rome

Mr. Howard J. Tyler, 90, of Rome, Georgia passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025 after a long illness. Howard was born to the late Samuel and Nina Bolin Tyler in Limestone County, Alabama, near the banks of the Elk River. Although his family moved to Rome when he was a young teenager, the Elk River and surrounding farmland remained a very special place to Howard, with annual family pilgrimages continuing throughout his life.

Mr. Tyler was a graduate of Johnson High School in Rome. Shortly thereafter, he married the love of his life, Carol Rolan, on September 28, 1956 at the Dykes Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Tyler then served in the United States Army, stationed in Tacoma, Washington. After his service ended, he and Carol returned to Rome where they raised their two children, and he began work as a carpenter with Benton Builders. His building skills landed him a job with the maintenance department at the Georgia Kraft Company, now Inland Rome. Mr. Tyler retired from Georgia Kraft in 2000. The family wishes to thank Mrs. Christa Williams for driving the Tylers to the mall each day to walk prior to their declining health, and to thank the staff of Riverwood Memory Care for their tender care.

Mr. Tyler was an active and faithful member of the North Rome Church of God for over fifty years. He had served on the Church & Pastor's Council, worked with the Willing Shepherds, taught the young adult class, volunteered with hospital visitation, and retired from teaching the Samaritan Adult Sunday School class after thirty plus years. If anything ever needed to be built for the Rome Passion Play, for Children's Ministry, or for anything at all, Howard was always eager to do kingdom work with his hands. He was passionate about his faith and raised his two children in the faith.

Mr. Tyler was preceded in death by his wife, Carol; by his parents, Samuel & Nina Tyler; by his brothers, Nancell, Hollis, Marvin, and Huey Tyler; by his two sisters, Sue Evette and Celia Puckett; by his son-in-law, Jimmy Parris. He is survived by two children: Cherie Parris of Rome; Rodney Tyler (Len) of Rome; five grandchildren, Jaime Bragdon (Clay); Brett Tyler (Catherine); Sadie Belcher (Zachaery); Erin Helton (Trace); Emily Thompson (David); eight great-grandchildren: Mason Martin, Dakota Bragdon, Logan Bragdon, Iris Bragdon, Leah Helton, Evan Helton, Naomi Belcher and Jonathan Thompson; a brother, Sam Tyler; many nieces and nephews.

The Tyler family will receive friends on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM at the North Rome Church of God, 1929 North Broad Street, Rome, Georgia 30161, with the funeral service immediately afterwards with Rev. Terry Addis officiating. A private burial to follow at Floyd Memory Gardens, 895 Cartersville Highway, Rome, Georgia 30161 with the following gentlemen serving as pallbearers: Clay Bragdon, Trace Helton, Brett Tyler, Zachaery Belcher, David Thompson and David Getman.

Salmon Funeral Home & Crematory has charge of the arrangements.
