Graden Mullis , age 78, of Rome, Georgia and a former Floyd County Schools Superintendent passed away early Friday morning, October 2, 2009 in Stockbridge, after an extended illness.
Mr. Mullis was born on September 19, 1931 in Cadwell, Georgia the son of the late Judson David Mullis, Sr. and the late Eddie Mae Mullis Dixon. He graduated from Cadwell High School, Berry College, and then the University of Georgia. Mr. Mullis enjoyed a long career in education with the Floyd County School System. where he served at Coosa High School, Glenwood Elementary School, and Armuchee High School. He served as Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of Floyd County Schools before his retirement in July 1992. In addition to his long history of service to local area schools, Mr. Mullis devoted much time and effort toward the direction and supervision of extra-curricular activities statewide. He served for over 20 years on the Executive Committee of the Georgia High School association. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman. Mr. Mullis was a Korean veteran having served in the United States Army and a long time member of First Baptist Church of Rome and was a member of the O.M. Cates Sunday School Class. Mr. Mullis was preceded in death by his parents, by brothers, Judson David Mullis, Jr., Woodrow Mullis and Fred Mullis and by a sister, Doris Moye.
Mr. Mullis and his family owe much love and appreciation to the staff at Dogwood Forest Assisted Living Center, the staff at Sacred Journey Hospice and his beloved caretakers, Jean Simms, Joyce Smalley and Romona Wallace.
Survivors include his children, Barry (Nianne) Mullis of Dahlonega, GA. and Donna (Bob) Gaylor of McDonough, GA.; grandchildren, Justin and Brooke Mullis and Beth Gaylor; sisters, Katherine Zachary, Louise (Edward) Colter and Almaleen (Billy) Stuckey; brothers, Thomas G. Mullis and Quinton Wayne (Martha Ann) Mullis.
Funeral services for Mr. Mullis will be held on Monday morning, October 5th, 2009 at 11:30 am in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Rome with Rev. William S. Davie and Dr. Floyd Roebuck officiating. Graveside and interment services will follow on Tuesday morning, October 6th, 2009 at 11:30 am in the Macon Memorial Park at Macon, GA.
Nephews and the grandson of Mr. Mullis will serve as active pallbearers. Members of the Scrap Iron /O.M. Cates Sunday School Class are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Rome on Monday, October 5th, 2009 following the funeral services.
