George Myron Baker ascended to Heaven on October 10, 2023, in his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 15, 1932, in LaFayette, Georgia, to the late George Milton Baker and Josephine Busby Baker.
Though a simple man, he was known by many names. To his friends and neighbors, he was Mr. Baker (or George, if y’all go way back). To his precious wife, siblings, and nieces and nephews, he was Myron. To his two children, he was Daddy. And to me, his only grandchild, and his two great-grandchildren, he was Papaw.
Gifted in woodwork and carpentry, my Papaw could, more often than not, be found in his wood shop, lap covered in sawdust, creating beautiful and intricate wood carvings based in his Christian faith. If not there, you might find him in his recliner doing “Circle Words” or in the kitchen making his famous homemade biscuits. On college football game days, Myron found joy in watching Georgia Football. He would often cheer loudly for his favorite team while sharing unforgettable moments with loved ones.
He loved spending quality time with his late wife of many years, Rosanell Ozment Baker. Their enduring love and unwavering support for one another served as an inspiration to all who knew them. Papaw would proudly tell anyone he met that he had been married to her for 58 years before her passing and the only argument they ever had was about who loved who more.
Papaw was a proud man with a servant heart. A hard-working man, he dedicated 33 years of his life working as a Die Mounter at the Inland Container Box Plant. A U.S. Army veteran, he proudly served his country from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. He was stationed in Trieste, Italy for 18 months and received the distinguished "Best in Battalion" award for his exceptional service. A devoted Christian, he proudly served the Lord through his wood crafts, as a member of Pisgah Baptist Church, and in his living testimony on a daily basis.
George Myron Baker was greeted at Heaven’s gates by his parents, George Milton and Josephine; his siblings, Elsie, Clive, Arlen, Mather, and Sandra; his loving wife, Rosanell; and his daughter, Debora. He leaves behind a lifetime of love and memories with his surviving siblings, Alfred and Diane; his son, Tommy; his granddaughter, Abby (Chase); his great-grandchildren, Atlas and Baker; and many nieces and nephews.
His life was his testimony, and his testimony was beautiful. We are all honored to have been loved and blessed by this sweet man.
