Donald E. "Don" Evans, age 67 of #686 Everett Springs Road, NE, Calhoun (the Everett Springs Community) died Saturday morning, August 2nd, 2008 at a local hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Mr. Evans was born on February 24th, 1941, the son of the late Lee Wesley Evans and the late Sara Francis Stephens Evans. Don was a member of the first graduating class of West Rome High School in 1959. Following graduation Don served for 4 years in the United States Navy and he and his family owned and operated Evans Piano and Organ Company for nearly 25 years and for a period of time owned and operated The Biscuit Bucket. Don opened and co-owned Arby's of Rome for the past 25 years and until his illness operated other stores in Rome. He was a member of the Floyd Springs Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Don was preceded in death by a sister Barbara Ann Thompson and by 2 brothers, William Keith "Bill" Evans and Lee Wesley Evans, Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Ethel Payne Evans, 2 daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer and Randall Moore and Sally Evans all of Rome; a granddaughter, Kinsey Moore, a grandson, Josh Moore and his wife, Amy, a sister, Joyce Hufstetler of Rome. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family also survive.
Funeral services for Donald E. "Don" Evans will be held on Tuesday morning, August 5th, 2008 at 11 o'clock at the Floyd Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert M. Skelton and the Rev. Daniel Hyde officiating with Charles Ables delivering the eulogy. Interment will follow in the family lot of the Salmon Cemetery.
Active pallbearers include Ben Lane, David Evans, Tim, Ted, Chuck and Mark Hufstetler. Honorary pallbearers include Charles Ables, Claborn Bradfield, Vaudry Sartin, M.C. Evans, Gary Busby, Earl Gibson, Cal Owens and Randy Davis.
Mr. Evans will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Monday) evening from 6 until 8 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to The Specialty Hospital at Floyd Medical Center, 304 Turner McCall Blvd., Rome, GA. 30172 or to the Missions Fund at Floyd Springs Baptist Church, 1869 Floyd Springs Road, Armuchee, Ga. 30105.
