Donald Adron Gillespie, age 81, of #223 Culpepper Road, NE, Calhoun, (the Rosedale Community) passed away on Sunday morning, October 31st, 2010 at a Rome, GA. hospital.
A native of Gordon County, Georgia, Mr. Gillespie was born on January 15th, 1929, the son of the late William Edward Gillespie and the late Mattie Mae Gulledge Gillespie. He had spent the greater part of his life in Floyd County and was a graduate of Oostanaula High School. Mr. Gillespie was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the United States Navy. Mr. Gillespie was a member and Deacon of the West Union Baptist Church for many years and prior to his retirement in 1983 was associated with Southern Bell for 31 years retiring as a technician and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. For many years he served as coach and manager of a Ladies Travel Softball organization. Mr. Gillespie loved gardening and was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Gillespie was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Janell Whittemore, Barbara Howell and Christine Roach, by 2 brothers, Frank and Tharrell Gillespie and by a 1 half-brother, Dennis Erwin;
Survivors include his wife, Wylene Pierce Gillespie to whom he was married on November 30th, 1967; a daughter and son-in-law, Stacy and Tommie Hoblitzell of Calhoun (Rosedale Community); 3 grandchildren, Tripp, Anna and Addie Grace Hoblitzell; 2 sisters, Willine Whittemore of Roswell, GA. and Virginia Amos of Calhoun; Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Donald Adron Gillespie will be held on Wednesday morning, November 3rd, 2010 at 11 o'clock at West Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Brooks and the Rev. Doug Couch officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot of West Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Gillespie will lie-in-state at the church on Wednesday morning from 10 until 11 o'clock.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, Ted Barnett, Jerry Coffman, Dewey Dunaway, Fred Abston, Harold and Ricky Pierce. Deacons of West Union Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Gillespie will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home in Rome where the family will receive friends this (Tuesday) evening from 6 until 9 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
