David M. "Marty" Willis, age 29, of #11 Marble Street, Rome "The Shannon Community" passed away on Thursday afternoon, April 4, 2013 at a Rome hospital.
A native of Rome and Floyd County, Marty was born on February 14, 1984, the son of David Harlan Willis and Peggy Martin Willis. He had been a resident of Rome and Floyd County for the greater part of his life, attended Model High School and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Rome. Marty was a veteran of the United States Army serving from 2007 until he was honorably discharged as a Specialist 4th Class in 2011. He served as a Calvary Scout in the U.S. Army and was a disabled veteran. Marty was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Rebekah S. Martin in 2007, and his paternal grandparents, Harlan Willis in 1972 and Edith Willis in 1976.
Marty is survived by his parents, David and Peggy Willis of Rome; maternal grandfather, Cohen Martin of Rome; former wife, Joy Alvarez of San Antonio, TX; three first cousins, Arthur Hargrove of Covington, GA, Hannah Lucas and Jonathan Lucas, both of Rome. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and other cousins.
Funeral services for David M. "Marty" Willis will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 10, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. in the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Dr. Gary Graves officiating. Graveside and interment services for Marty will follow in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA, on Thursday afternoon, April 11, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. with The Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
Marty will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m.
