Mr. Cohen Rhye Martin, age 97, of Rome, GA, passed away on Tuesday evening, March 28, 2017.
On March 28th, our beloved, sweet, 97-year-old Daddy went home. Having grown up during the depression, and losing his Father at an early age, he served in the United States Navy as a signalman during World War II as part of The Greatest Generation. Having married Rebekah Stone of Rome on September 26, 1942, and working for Southern Bell prior to the war, he returned to that job (which they retained for him,) and moved to Rome where he stayed employed for 42 years with that company, and 66 years with his only wife. Rebekah preceded him in death on March 23, 2007. This is a testament to his loyalty and perseverance. He saw many changes to the world, people, and technology during his time. He was a great Father, Son, Brother, and friend, that lived a full life and left a lasting legacy. He was generous, brave, fun, duty bound, and enjoyed people, friends and family. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by a grandson, Marty Willis, on April 4, 2013, a sister, Thetis Martin Davis and a brother, Maynard Boatwright. He will be missed greatly, but he will live on through the many memories we have. He always said, as we say now, not goodbye, but "So Long" Daddy. We all look forward to being with you again.
Mr. Martin is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy Martin Willis and her husband David, of Rome, Becky Martin Lucas and her husband Smith, of Rome; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Susan Martin, of Newnan, GA; grandchildren, Hannah Lucas and Jonathan Lucas; one brother, Hoyt Martin, of Wrightsville, GA. Several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Martin will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Carl Sidwell Chapel of the Salmon Funeral Home with Dr. Joe Baskin and Rev. Scott Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Hills Memory Gardens with the Honor Guard from Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion conferring military funeral honors.
The family will receive friends at Salmon Funeral Home on Saturday, April 1, 2017, from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m.
