Boyce Hubert Ray, Jr

Boyce H. Ray, Jr., age 82, of Highway 411 East, Rome, and a former long time resident of the Sherwood Forest Community, died early Thursday morning, May 1st, 2008 at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome.
A native of Gordon County, Mr. Ray was born on April 24th, 1926, the son of the late Boyce H. Ray, Sr. and the late Dimple Edmondson Ray. He had been a resident of Floyd County for more than 50 years and was a member of the Sherwood Forest Baptist Church. Mr. Ray was a graduate of Calhoun High School. As a youth Mr. Ray was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He attended and graduated from West Georgia Jr. College and was a 1950 graduate of the University of Georgia. Mr. Ray was a World War II veteran having served in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. LSM 132 and the U.S.S. Atlas. He was a mason, was youth football coach with the Boys Club of Rome and the Rome/Floyd Recreation Department for over 30 years. He was a member of Adams-Coker-Covington-Watters American legion Post #52 and prior to his retirement he was associated with Inland Rome, serving as a Lab Technician. Mr. Ray was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Moore. He was married on October 15th, 1949 to Edith Louise Headrick Ray who preceded him in death on January 31st, 2006.
Survivors include 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Bill Staney of Rome and Beth and Kevin Cornett of Cartersville, GA.; 1 son and daughter-in-law, Boyce H. Ray, III and his wife Fran of Rome;5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and 5 step-great-grandchildren also survive as do a sister, Louise King of Cartersville and a special friend, Richard Burris. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Mr. Ray will be held Sunday afternoon, May 4th, 2008 at 2 o'clock from the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with Dr. Ralph Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Fain Cemetery in Calhoun, GA. with Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard conducting military graveside rites.
Members of Shanklin-Attaway Post #5 American Legion Honor Guard will serve as active pallbearers.
Mr. Ray will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Saturday) evening from 6 until 9 o'clock. At other hours they will be at their respective homes.
