Mrs. Betty Sue McNew Smith, age 80, of Northside Drive the Coosa Community, passed away on Monday afternoon, March 11, 2019, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Smith was born May 18, 1938 in Rome, GA, daughter of the late J.M. McNew and Avey Ester Gilreath McNew. Until her retirement in the late 1990s, Mrs. Smith had been a Millworker and had been employed with Mohawk Industries. She was a member of Wilkerson Road Baptist Church and spent her retirement years enjoying her family, gardening, housekeeping and traveling. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Alvin James Smith, whom she married in December of 1971, and by a sister, Frances Carpenter.
Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Cynthia R. Cartwright of Silver Creek; a son, Stephen Undra Smith of Gaylesville, AL; five grandchildren, Nathaniel, Jennifer, Whitney, Myranda and Stephanie; ten great-grandchildren, Ashton, Cole, Creasie, Cara, Chase, Joseph, Cirius, Clayton, Dakota, and Hunter.
Funeral services for Mrs. Smith will be held Thursday, March 14, 2019, at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Salmon Funeral Home with Reverend Ken Oates officiating. Interment will follow in Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery the Coosa Community.
The family will gather Wednesday at Salmon Funeral Home where they will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. At other hours the family may be contacted at their respective residences.
