Audrey Mathis Phelps, 94, of Rome, passed away at Riverwood Remembrance Village on May 29, 2017 after an extended battle with Dementia/Alzheimer's.
Mrs. Phelps was born on March 18, 1923 in Ellijay, Georgia, daughter of the late Ben and Lissie Mathis. She was a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church and served in many areas. She spent a number of years as an active member of the Shorter Avenue Baptist Church "Young at Heart" and loved the many bus trips they went on. She regularly attended events held at the Rome-Floyd Senior Adult Recreation Center and was a member of their Line Dancing Group. She worked at Celanese Mill and as a hairdresser, before she chose to be a full-time homemaker. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and daughter. She spent much of her time caring for her mother, Lissie, her brother, Alward, her sister, Ora Lee, and many friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leroy C. Phelps, an infant son, David C. Phelps, her brothers, Claude Mathis, Coy Mathis, Hassel Mathis, Clay Mathis, Alward Mathis, Edwin Mathis, and an infant sister, Hazel Mathis.
Survivors include a daughter, Betsy P. Trammell (Jerry), granddaughters Kelly Roberson (Brandon), Katie Hyman (Matt), great grandsons Ryan and Dylan Roberson, and Kip Hyman, and a sister Ora Lee Beam. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
The family of Audrey Phelps would like to thank all of the caregivers at Riverwood Remembrance Village and Homestead Hospice for the exceptional care that was given to their loved one.
Receiving of friends will be held on Thursday, June 1, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Salmon Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 2516 New Calhoun Hwy. in Rome. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Ken Hinkley officiating. Interment will follow at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers are asked to meet at the funeral home on Thursday at 10:15 a.m. and include Brandon Roberson, Matt Hyman, Larry Jacks, Ed Haygood, Eddie Vann, and Kevin Davis.
