Annie Catherine Smith, age 79, of the Woods Road, Rome passed away on Thursday morning, November 21, 2013, at her residence.
A native of Floyd County, Mrs. Smith was born on January 23, 1934, the daughter of the late William Brennon Whatley and the late Ethel Mae Gaither Whatley. She was a 1952 graduate of Coosa High School and was a homemaker. Mrs. Smith was a member of the West Rome Baptist Church where she was a member of the Mary Lee Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Coosa Chapter #412 Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Whatley. Mrs. Smith was married on December 13, 1952 to James Stewart Smith who preceded her in death on September 22, 2012.
Survivors include a daughter, Susan Alred of Rome and a son-in-law Kelly Alred of Rome; 5 sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Stanley Smith and his wife Cecelia of Rome, Brennon and Julie Smith of Rocky Face, GA., Chris and April Smith of Rome, Tim and Lorna Smith of Waldorf, MD. and Paul and Mistee Smith of Rome; 17 grandchildren, Allison Fuquea, Crystal Whelchel, Angela Buffington, Shelby Smith, Captain Brennon Smith, Jr. U.S.M.C., Jonathan Smith, Kristin Smith, Meredith Smith, Griffin Smith, Mallory Smith, Sarah Smith, William Smith, Edward Smith Emily Smith, Francesca Smith, Christopher Alred and Ashley Alred; 7 great-grandchildren, Kayleigh Whelchel, Nathan Whelchel, Jake Boatner, Brandon Fuquea, Kaden Buffington, Malachi Buffington and William Smith, II. 2 brothers, Eugene Whatley of Texas and Leeman Whatley of Georgia. Nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Annie Catherine Smith will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 24, 2013 at 2 o'clock at the Parkview Chapel of Fred Talley's Funeral Home with the Reverend Stanley Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot Oaknoll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Smith will remain at Fred Talley's Parkview Chapel where the family will receive friends this (Saturday) November 23, 2013 from 4 until 7 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
Mrs. Smith's children will serve as active pallbearers.
