Kirk Alford, age 47, of 4391 Calhoun Road, P.O. Box 66, Rome, died Saturday morning, May 12th, 2007, at a local hospital.
A native of Floyd County, Kirk was born on January 4th, 1960, the son of Barbara Staton Alford and the late Allison E. Alford. He moved to Rome at age 16 from Adairsville, where he attended school and was a 1978 graduate of West Rome High School, attended Shorter College and Middle Georgia College. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Adult Couples Sunday School Class. While at West Rome High School, Kirk won the President Award and held many records in sports. At the time of his death, Kirk coached the 17 and under AAU. Kirk served as a volunteer coach with the Rome Floyd County Recreation Department and the Upward League at the YMCA, where they won several state championships. Kirk was a well known athlete, basketball player, volunteer coach and was phenomenon player in his own right. Kirk served as a marketing associate in Rome with Sysco Foods of Atlanta. Kirk was devoted to his family and to their activities and looked forward to family vacations. Kirk was preceded in death by his father and a son, Jared Alford in 1996.
Survivors include his wife, Jill Hufstetler Alford, to whom he was married on February 12th, 1984, 1 daughter, Sarah Alford of Rome; 2 sons, Nathan and Marcus Alford both of Rome; his mother, Barbara Alford of Rome; 1 sister Edna Alford of Rome; a half brother, Adam Alford of Rome; a half sister, Amy Rogers of Rome; his mother and father-in-law, Joyce and Hollis Hufstetler of Rome; 2 uncles, Eston and Johnny Alford and 1 aunt Charlene Smith all of Rome.
Funeral services for Kirk Alford will be held on Tuesday afternoon, May 15th, 2007, at 2 o'clock at the Calvary Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Andrews officiating. Interment will follow in Oaknoll Memorial Gardens. Kirk will lie-in-state at the Calvary Baptist Church on Tuesday from 1 until 2 o'clock.
The following will serve as active pallbearers, David Newman, Mason Hudlow, Ralph Rutledge, Greg Phillips, Tim Davis, Al Thomas, Jimmie Fletcher and Steve Masters. The following will serve as honorary pallbearers, Aaron Carroll, Mark Phillips, Donny Chupp, Greg Shumate, Ken Guice, Steve Catanzano and Joe Smith. Special Guest will include all former basketball and football players of Coach Alford. All active pallbearers, honorary pallbearers and special guest are asked to arrive at Calvary Baptist Church at 1:30 on Tuesday afternoon.
The family will receive friends this (Monday) evening at CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH, #101 Broadus Road, NE, Rome, from 6 until 9 o'clock. At other hours they will be at the residence.
